The basic router class that I was teaching that day had just finished and I was perusing a pallet of maple boards at Johnson’s Lumber. http://www.theworkbench.com/  The  lumber was setting off to one side of the warehouse, waiting to be loaded into the storage rack.  I thought that this would be a good opportunity to see if there were any treasures to be found.  It was not long and I found a single board of Tiger Stripe Maple.  You know the one….the board that you have to own but don’t have any idea what you would make with it.  This 10′ Maple plank stood in the corner of my shop for over a year before I would decide what to built with it.

You can call it Tiger Stripe Maple or Curly Maple, regardless of it’s name, I think you will agree that the grain in this wood is spectacular.  Mustering  some patience and a little luck, this jewel has become a sofa table.  The table measures 18 1/2″ wide by 40″ long.  I usually build sofa tables or hall tables about 15″ wide but I could not bring myself to cut off any more of that curl. The inlays on the top and skirt are Cherry.  The finish is Hoods,  Magna Shield high gloss pre-catalyzed lacquer, rubbed to a mirror finish. http://www.hoodfinishing.com/
